Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced on July 25th that it would be discontinuing new customer access to AWS Cloud9.
In their blog post, AWS provided guidance on how to migrate away from Cloud9, stating that while existing customers can continue to use the service, no new features will be introduced, though security, availability, and performance improvements will continue.
After careful consideration, we have made the decision to close new customer access to AWS Cloud9, effective July 25, 2024. AWS Cloud9 existing customers can continue to use the service as normal. AWS continues to invest in security, availability, and performance improvements for AWS Cloud9, but we do not plan to introduce new features.
AWS DevOps Blog
Cloud9 is an integrated development environment (IDE) that was originally created as a standalone service in 2010. It provided developers with a cloud-based coding environment accessible through a web browser, allowing for collaborative coding and easy setup of development workspaces. In 2016, Amazon Web Services (AWS) acquired Cloud9, integrating it into their suite of cloud services. As part of AWS, Cloud9 offered features such as code editing, debugging, and terminal access, all within a browser-based interface. It was particularly useful for developing serverless applications and working with AWS Lambda functions.
This deprecation impacts services that rely on Cloud9 and further underscores the risks of vendor lock-in in cloud computing. The move aligns with AWS's apparent shift towards focusing on core infrastructure services, emphasizing the importance of cloud-agnostic approaches and the need for organizations to make strategic choices about their technology stack.
For organizations currently using or considering AWS Cloud9, this announcement necessitates the search for robust alternatives. One notable option is Daytona, which offers a self-hosted, enterprise-grade solution for standardized and automated development environments.
